Vintage Russian Soviet Musical Cigarette Box 1960'sSoviet Space programs
Dedicated to the launch of the world's first artificial Earth satellite (1957), the world's first man in space -
Yuri Gagarin (1961) and the world's first moon satellite (1966).
The box is made of brass and bakelite.
The musical mechanism is in working order.
The mechanism is signed by the master, seen in photo №12.
When the cigarette case is opened, the melody of the song "Song of the Motherland", Russian :
Широка страна моя родная,
Много в ней лесов, полей и рек!
Я другой такой страны не знаю,
Где так вольно дышит человек.
This is nostalgia!
Size - 16cm / 6.3" high, and 11cm / 4.3" by 8cm / 3.1 " width.
A short history of Russian space programs:
Sputnik 1 was the first artificial Earth satellite. The Soviet Union launched it into an elliptical low Earth orbit on 4 October 1957. It orbited for three weeks
before its batteries died and then orbited silently for two months before it fell back into the atmosphere on the 25th December 1957.
Sputnik 1 was
launched during the International Geophysical Year from Site No.1/5, at the 5th Tyuratam range, in Kazakh SSR (now known as the Baikonur Cosmodrome).
On 12 April 1961, at 6:07 am UTC, the Vostok 3KA-3 (Vostok 1) spacecraft was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome. Aboard was Gagarin, the first human
to travel into space. Gagarin continues to be internationally recognised as the first human in space and first to orbit the Earth
Luna 10
was a 1966 Soviet Luna program, robotic spacecraft mission, also called Lunik 10. It was the first artificial satellite of the Moon.
The Luna 10 spacecraft was launched towards the Moon from an Earth-orbiting platform on 31 March 1966. The spacecraft entered lunar orbit on 3 April 1966.
